I'm a big fan of Mhairi McFarlane's writing, but this book is exceptional. Eve, Ed, Susie, and Justin have been friends since high school. This is really Eve's story though it's all about her relationships with the others. Susie is her BFF and she's been in love with Ed forever. He's been in a relationship for the last decade or more so Eve's love is unrequited. When a terrible accident happens, Eve is forced to examine the basis of her feelings and adjust them accordingly.I stayed up late reading this because it's soooo good. It's about love, friendship, deceit, and growing up, among other things. The writing is some of McFarlane's best, especially as the story unfolds. It's a great read that I highly recommend. I love Mhirai McFarlane books. I hadn’t read a book by her in awhile and saw this one recommended so I had high hopes. In some ways it met the expectations and in some ways it didn’t.You know how I say a man and a woman can never just be friends? Well this book definitely agrees. This book is about foursome of friends - two guys, two girls. One guy is gay. The other guy is straight and engaged but has more than just friendship with his two gal pals (sounds so salacious written like that!). One of the friends unexpectedly died in a freak accident and the protagonist is left to reflect on her individual friendships and who she believes she loves.What I liked:I liked that until midway through you expect the expected. I love that Eve learned to respect herself and respectfully call out those that haven’t. She was her own hero. I love that even while hurt and emotionally taken advantage of she still had an open mind and heart for people.What I didn’t like:I honestly couldn’t get into the book for the first half of it. I think because I thought i knew where it was going since i have read so many rom cons. When they dropped in an unexpected character and mission it got much better. So go in with an open mind!
